Cancun For Your Next Girlfriends Trip

Cancun is a well known ragin’ par-tay destination hotspot, where you and your BFFs can party like it 1999! With plenty of adults-only, all-inclusive, playground, getting a little frisky is the norm. Shenanigans abound day and night at the pool, bars, beaches, and nightclubs BUT there’s so much more to do and see.

Here are the reasons why Cancun is a good choice for a girlfriend get-away.

1. Easy to Access: If you’re in North America and looking for an international destination but don’t want to mess with a bunch of connections to get to a remote island, then a Cancun vacation is what to put on your list. It’s on the sun-soaked Yucatan Peninsula and luckily, most major airlines fly there.

2. Beaches: Sun and sand! 14 miles of beautiful white sandy beaches with plenty of space to plop under palapas, wiggle your toes in the sand and enjoy your place in the sun. Cancun and the area to the south, the Riviera Maya, is home to some 150 miles of beach.

The best beach in Cancun’s Hotel Zone is undoubtedly Playa Delfines (Dolphin Beach), which is located at kilometer 20. This public beach is the only one in the hotel zone that isn’t home to any hotels or restaurants. There are also marvelous beaches in Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres and the Riviera Maya.

What’s not to love about a sunrise on the beach?

It is important for visitors to always pay attention to flags on the beach, which indicate water conditions. A black flag is the highest warning level meaning do not swim. A red flag indicates dangerous conditions; swim with caution. A yellow flag means there is no immediate danger, but still use caution while swimming. A green flag means that it’s safe to swim. Some more remote beaches may not have flags, so it’s especially important to swim with caution in those areas.

Oh, and Cancun’s beaches are made of white coral and will never heat up or burn your feet, so leave those flip-flops by the pool.

3. Cenotes: The name “cenotes” is derived from the Mayan name meaning secret well or sink-holes that are often filled with water; forming caves and underground rivers in Mexico. With so many located just a stone’s throw away from Cancun exploring at least one or more of these breathtaking natural wonders is a must. Snorkel, swim or dive and explore the underwater formations and marine life that fill these waters. We visited Saamal Cenote. Lockers, life jackets, changing areas, showers and a certified lifeguard are available at Saamal. Bring your swimsuit, hat, biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent.  Your camera is a must.  For even more opportunity, bring your dive mask to explore this 200 feet deep cenote.

3. Cultural legacy: Live the magic and legends of the Mayan culture at Chichen Itza, the most famous archaeological site in Mexico. Cancun is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, staking its share of the Mayan legacy. A world heritage site, the second most visited archaeological site in Mexico and a world of immense cultural significance are all reasons to visit Chichen Itza while in Cancun. This ancient Mayan Ruin is a place of towering pyramids, gigantic temples, intricately carved columns and an array of “do or die” sports fields. Perhaps the most famous site here is the Castillo Pyramid that consists of four sides containing 365 steps, 52 panels and 18 terraces. This pyramid built for cosmological symbolism is accessed by a narrow stairway and a focal point of Chichen Itza.

4. Tequila Tasting: Like Tequila and Mezcal? You’ve been doing it wrong … Much like wine tasting, tequila tasting is considered an art in Mexico, where over 100 distilleries are located.

Cancun offers many places to try some of the local drink. The Restaurante La Destileria is a tequila museum that gives you the opportunity to learn more about the origins of tequila and the complex distilling process. At the end of the tour, a guide will sit you down and explain various types of tequila before giving visitors a sample.

How to taste Tequila
1. Pour about an ounce into a glass
2. Take note of its color
3. Swirl and see how it clings to the glass
4. Notice and savor its aroma
5. Take a small SIP
6. Let it sit for a moment under your tongue and breath through your nose
7. Swallow and then exhale through your mouth
8. Cleanse palate and continue your tasting

Please do not take shots and call it a tasting!!!! Tequila and Mezcal like any other refined beverages are to be treated with respect.

My girlfriends and I in Cancun

I know you and your girls just wanna have fun and it’s hard to leave the beach, pool or the absolutely gorgeous accommodations you have but I feel that it’s important to venture out. There’s so much to see out there. Get to know what the local area is known for. Find out what people do for a living, and for fun. I found the state of Yucatan to have a very rich history, to hear it from an indigenous perspective is another level of contextual knowledge.
