25 Black-Owned Restaurants In & Around Seattle

In the wake of the most recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and of others who did not gain national media attention, there is renewed interest in all the ways non-black people can support the black community, whether it’s by asking politicians to repeal racist laws, or just by supporting black-owned businesses.

I always say, “money talks”. I’m encouraging you to spend your money at black-owned restaurants as a direct way to effect change under capitalism, given the historic and systemic lack of resources afforded to black communities and black business owners. We need to start building black wealth to gain clout economically and politically.

Black-run businesses are more likely to be turned down for financing than any other racial group, and restaurants are more likely to be rejected for funding than most other categories of business. Many of these businesses remain open for take-out and/or delivery service during the coronavirus pandemic, and as they open up for seating occupancy levels many are taking precautions to maintain social distancing.

Check out my curated list of black-owned restaurants in and around Seattle that you can support below.

Supporting black-owned businesses is a tangible step toward allyship rather than just saying they support Black Lives Matter.

TIPPING

TIPPING: As you are out and about supporting black-owned restaurants and other services, please remember to generously tip their black employees. Studies have shown that both white and black restaurant customers discriminate against black wait staff by tipping them less than their white co-workers. This is often the outcome of unconscious bias. So the next time you’re throwing down 15 or 20 percent before heading out of a restaurant, take a moment and think about how much you are leaving, and why.
