I wish I could write down every experience, every word, every thought, every feeling that is racing through my mind. At the same time, I’m lacking in words. I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude and an awakened sense of purpose. Earlier this year I wrote about getting out of my comfort zone. The trip to Koh Samui is part of that journey – This was the furthest and the most unfamiliar place I’d traveled alone!! And it was an amazing experience for these reasons.
The Food: Yes, Pad Thai is everywhere but why stick to what you know, when there is so much more? The food was fresh and authentic. From the street food cart and nigh market vendors to the 5-star rated hotels. The seafood was particularly fresh, flavorful and very well prepared.
The Thai Experience. 1 evening, 4 courses, 15 dishes, 20 strangers, unlimited drinks, The Thai Experience is the ultimate dinner party in Koh Samui! I think our party had five of the seven continents represented at this gathering. The sense of community was remarkably instant, a bunch of strangers who became fast friends. Speaking of meeting people, I met Monique (@mns_nola), from NOLA but lives in NYC. I quickly told her how NOLA is my new favorite U.S. domestic destination… and we both have a shared love for Anthony Bourdain (RIP) but I digress.
Joe, the chef was entertaining, knows how to work a room and really welcoming to all. He paid attention to detail and was accommodating of people allergies and pallets. At $75 USD, you got a great meal, drinks, transportation to and from the hotel, learned a thing or two about Thai culture, practiced a new cocktail recipe and gained a bunch of new friends. What’s not to love?? Do not hesitate to book this as your “must-do” on vacation in Koh Samui Island.
Sea, Sun, and Sand: I saw the most magnificent blue sea my eyes have ever looked upon in Koh Samui. Its beaches are world-famous for their fine white sands. I stayed on Bophut beach and I had a chance to visit Lamai beach. Other popular beaches include Maenam and Lipa Noi. I swam in its crystal clear waters and basked in the sun, Even when it rained I enjoyed the smell of the salty sea. I loved watching the sunrise and see it set.
The Spas: Koh Samui Spas and Thai Massages are extremely popular AND easy to find very good inexpensive ones. You could literally have a massage daily – do it!! Stave off jet lag or fall asleep after a full day of activities, better yet make it a daily relaxation ritual as you take in the sunset view, it’s entirely your choice. Thai massages are simply perfect on rainy days.
The Attractions: Please take a city tour to visit the attractions in Koh Samui. Highlights included: Happy Buddha, Wat Plai Laem temple, Chaweng View Point, Mummified Monk and Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. PSA: For conservation’s sake please do not go on the elephant treks.
In addition to the city tour, I highly recommend going to the Night Market. The Sunday one is in Lamai and Friday’s is at Fishermans Village. Fishermans Village is an attraction of its own, even the night market is not open. It has lots of restaurants, bars, spas, and shops. Many have views of the beach and some entertainment.
Etiquette note: It’s customary to take off your shoes as you enter someone’s home, business and of course places of worship. Most temples have strict dress codes. For example, I covered my exposed shoulders at the Big Buddha. There are signs posted of what’s unacceptable attire. At the entrance of the shrines or temples, there are stands where can borrow or buy a shawl or wrap. Both men and women have to cover up.
The People: I discovered and experienced a culture different from my own. I met wonderful people from across the globe. Thai culture is beautiful and humble by nature. The people are modest and spiritual. I stayed and went to places where I was the only black person. When planning this trip, my research told me to expect colorism in Thailand and that the people were very anti-black, especially if they suspect you are African. But when I went there I can only think of one place where I felt unwelcomed. Everyone else was exceptionally polite and welcoming. I ate and drank strange food with strangers, and in the end, it created a community. I’m determined to fight racism, globally. I cannot do that holed up at home.
“Black Girl Magic is a term used to illustrate the universal awesomeness of black women. It’s about celebrating anything we deem particularly dope, inspiring, or mind-blowing about ourselves.” —Julee Wilson #blackgirlmagicClick To TweetWe live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. Travel as much as you can, as far as you can, for as long as you can. While I’ve traveled alone before, there was something in this trip that was life-changing. Stay tuned for what’s to come.
